Ecuador is
the first banana producer in the world and a major
flower exporter. Oil is the top revenue generator.
Other resources include shrimp and cacao. A long list
of non-traditional exports (exotic fruits and vegetables)
are increasingly gaining acceptance in American, European
and Asian markets. Major cities provide all types
of services and are equipped with a solid accommodation
infrastructure and modern technology. Quito is the
capital city and the country’s political and
financial center; Guayaquil is considered as Ecuador’s
economic capital; Cuenca, the third largest city,
is a major handcraft producer. Other dynamic cities
with bustling commercial activities include Manta,
Ambato, Riobamba, Loja and Esmeraldas. Throughout
the year, industrial exhibitions, national and international
conventions take place at all these cities. Tourism,
the country’s fourth source of revenue, is another
outstanding economic activity. As one of the 17 countries
with the highest biodiversity concentration in the
planet, Ecuador has 24 natural areas protected by
the State and scores of protection forests. Many parks
are also cared for by private organizations, ecological
groups and colleges. Wildlife reserves are the natural
habitat of 1,640 species of birds, butterflies (4,500
species), reptiles (345), amphibians (358) and mammals
(258 species). Travel agencies throughout the country
organize tours through the most attractive settings.
Most tourist firms are located in Quito (50.4%).
