People planning on travelling around the country should inoculate against yellow fever. hepatitis A, polio, typhoid fever, rabies and tetanus. If you are planning on touring the jungle you should take medication against malaria. Also, drinking bottled water is highly recommended. To offset altitude sickness (headache, dizziness, fatigue, lack of oxygen), which might affect visitors during the first few days in the Andean region, you should drink plenty of water, take aspirin, avoid alcoholic beverages, eliminate smoking and breathe deeply. The public health care system in Ecuador covers most of the country. There are several private health care services in major cities, including hospitals, clinics, general and specialized health centers. Also, a variety of national and international insurance companies provide health care coverage at reasonable prices.
